The thing about Underworld and why it's stood the test of time, is that it's a series of movies, comics, and visual novels, that anyone can rally behind. When you watch Underworld which was released in 2003, you're lead to believe that Lucian, elder lycan and alpha of the lycan clans, is the 'bad guy' but as actress Kate Beckinsale, who plays vampire death dealer Selene, dives ever deeper into the coven's history, the truth begins to revel itself and nothing is as it seems. Now in order to fully understand the series, the way to watch it, is by buying all the movies (Underworld Endless War to my knowledge, never did well, so the movie is nearly impossible to find on DVD).

Underworld; Rise of the lycans
Underworld
Underworld; Evolution
Underworld; Awakening
Underworld; Blood Wars - final movie - a sixth was teased but never happened.

In Underworld; Rise of the lycans, we learn what ultimately, started the war. Lucian, the first known lycan, fell in love with the vampire princess, Sonja. A forbidden union and love similar to that of Romeo and Juliet (which the movie has all the hallmark makings of). Their love, sadly ends in tragedy, when their union is discovered by Sonja's father, Vampire elder and former warlord, Viktor, who condemns them both to death by sunlight.

This leads up to the war seen in Underworld. In Evolution, we meet Marcus, vampire elder and only vampire son of Alexander Corvinus, the first immortal and only direct link to his father. In this, Marcus has been turned into a hybrid, thanks in part, to Viktor killing Singe, the lycan healer/scientist in Underworld and leaving his body over Marcus' tomb. Marcus, furious over what he's witnessed through Singe's blood memories, decides, he's gonna go find his brother, Werewolf elder, William (whom we briefly meet at the starting of the movie).

In the movie Awakening, a new threat has shown itself, this being Antigen. Somehow, in this series, both the government and the general public have become aware of the existence of the Vampires and Lycans. A program to study and potentially harness their powers soon escalates into an all-out genocide and shortly after the Purge begins, Selene and Michael are captured by humans. Due to her enhanced vampiric traits, Selene is imprisoned in cryogenic suspension.

In Blood Wars, the war for dominance comes to head and ultimately, Selene is crowned Elder. However, the movie ends with a scene of her meeting with her daughter, Eve. A cliff hanger, and one fans have begged for a conclusion too. But sadly, this doesn't seem to be in the cards for the franchise, which ultimately, did very well.
Many fans would of liked the series to continue, at least to the conclusion for Eve's storyline as we really didn't get to see where that story would/could of gone. Others would of loved, myself included, to see more of Lucian's story as we all firmly believe, that there's so much left unsaid and untold. Such as the Great War prior to the one seen in Underworld. We know he and the vampire reagent Kraven made a pact, but we don't see what lead up to this. We don't get to learn about the plot that Kraven made with Lucian and the help of the vampire historian, Tanis (whom, even in the few snippets where he's seen, we still know so little about).

This has lead to many fans wanting more. While it's hard to figure out how a story would be spun, we know there's plenty of reference material given in Underworld Rise of the Lycans and Underworld itself, to give us enough material to do a movie based upon the pact that Kraven and Lucian made. What was the ultimate end goal? We know Kraven sought to overthrow the elders and therefore take control of the covens, but what we don't know, is the details of the pact, he and Lucian made. What did the lycans ultimately stand to gain? We only briefly know that they were not to be forgotten once the spoils were divided (as was stated by Lucian when he and Kraven met one rainy night in an alleyway somewhere in Budapest) but what we don't know is what, exactly, those spoils would/could of been. And this is where such a movie, could fill in those gaps.

Many fans theorize that the pact would of included that the lycans would of been allowed to blend in with society, however, this, in theory, makes no sense simply because, it's well known that there isn't just Lucian's pack. It's well known that the packs were divided, so it stands to reason, that many had already done this merging into the generalized population. And it would stand to reason, that many lycans, held positions of power within the human society, such as being lawyers, firemen, policemen, etc. So this is where the origins of this pact, would be beneficial to the franchise (and we, the fans of Lucian, would get more Michael Sheen dressed as Lucian of course).
