In 2003 Underworld, produced by Len Wisemen hit the big screen and left the world pretty much dumbstruck with how well the film was made. Everything from the lycans to the storyline was done so beautifully that it left us asking for me - and we got it. In the stunning 5 films that followed and a subsequent animation.
But I then get asked the following "how did you become a fan?" "why did you become a fan?" "why do you like the films so much?" and so on. So before we dive into the varying questions, let's first outline how the films should be watched, as it can get tricky!
First you'll want to watch in the following order, the following films; Underworld Rise of the Lycans, Underworld, Underworld Endless War, Underworld Evolution, Underworld Awakening and Underworld Blood Wars. In this way, you'll understand the films better along with the storyline much better. Be advised that the films do alot of flashbacking, meaning, you'll often have actors and actresses who aren't in the film you're currently watching, popping up in cameo appearances within a flashback or 'Blood Memory'. Keep in mind, many of these, more so with the first film, were done when Princess Sonja was a blonde and portrayed by Actress Jázmin Dammak but due to other commitments, was unable to be filmed in Underworld Rise of the Lycans and thus the part went to Actress Rhona Mitra, who, in many fans opinions, portrayed the vampire, Princess Sonja, beautifully.
Fun Fact: Rhona Mitra - who plays the super sexy Sonja in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - was originally considered for the role of Selene (Kate Beckinsale).
How did you become a fan?: In 2003 when Underworld first came out, I was only 14 but it was a time of turmoil for me so I didn't discover the films until much later. Shortly after the second film was released I went on a literal hunt for the first and after watching both films, fell in love with the storyline. How someone (Lucian), could love someone so deeply, for so long, that they'd risk it all in the name of justice, blew my mind. More so when you consider that we live in a world where partners simply don't last. Some do but many never see it past their first year of marriage and the very rare ones, are the ones we admire from afar but have the silent attitude of 'give it time'. So it was easy for me to throw myself, more or less, head first into a world where, the balance of good versus evil, was always at the cutting edge of one outweighing the other but somehow, someway, good always seemed to come out the victor. This, indirectly helped me become the fan I am today. I hold enough knowledge that, if it were even remotely possible for this to happen, it's safe to assume, I would not only be able to survive in that universe, but I'd thrive.
Why did you become a fan?: I think you become a fan without even knowing it. It happens so smoothly for some but for others it takes time. I signed up to the Underworld website when it was up and eagerly awaited news on when the next films were going into post production. I eagerly awaited news on a release date for the films to hit theater and then DVD and I even more so awaited news on whether these films would be extended or not. So I think becoming a fan, was easy for me as I connected with the characters so easily. I found some to be more amusing than others and I could easily see my life written in the film in some areas (such as having an abusive father figure).
Why do you like the films so much?: I love them would be a correct term but I love them because the storyline isn't your atypical Romeo and Juliet. There's betrayal, backstabbing, politics, and hidden agendas. It keeps you on the edge of your seat when you watch the films in order (which can take all day depending on what you have going on). I love that, indirectly, I've been able to connect with the actors and actresses, making and forming friendships that have lasted far longer than most of my other friendships have. And indirectly, these friendships have opened doors to other friendships to form.
I hope, as do many of the other fans, that Kate will return to the role of Selene and that we can close out the chapter that is Selene's story. But, as with all things, we may never know what the future holds. Underworld, as it has proven in the past, has a way of surprising those of us who eagerly await to see what the next film will bring us. We know the story has been written, we just need it to be put to the big screen. But. We shall see.
Aki.
